Talkin’ Body Love with Annalise Braakensiek

Annalise Braakensiek is an Australian model, TV personality, actress, designer, eco-warrior, vegetarian cook, animal rights activist and lover of life, yoga and good times (…seriously friends she does it all). She’s also insanely sweet, genuine and super smart. We got to talk health, happiness, body love and gush over our shared love of yoga and electro.

How do you keep healthy and happy?

I stay healthy by eating a balanced organic diet that’s meat, wheat and dairy free and training like an absolute boss!

I practice lots of Yoga and Pilates at BodyMindLife, go to the Future Sound of Yoga events,  do F45 cardio circuits and have recently started training with a wonderful woman Jana Haupt who is helping me overcome and heal old injuries. Her method is so unique, I can’t wait to see and share the results on my FB page Annalise Braakensiek when Ive completed her detox and 3 months training, yike’s!  I also do coastal power walks, soft sand runs and I meditate for 20 mins twice a day.

I’m happy because I prioritise my health and wellbeing above everything else. I love to eat and feel well, and I have to say since completing my Bondi Meditation Vedic Meditation course, my health and happiness has increased beyond!

I love cooking,  travelling, music, dancing, having time off to hang with my loved ones, I love designing, going to art galleries, hanging with my man and my little Burmese man Frankie (and my siblings when we are in the same country at the same time) watching art house films and being at the beach in summer is definitely my happy place.

What pressures do you have/feel as a woman, model and actress?

As a model, I definitely feel the pressure to keep my weight down, I looooove my food and I’m a naturally curvy girl… so staying lighter than my natural weight to fit into the samples is somewhat of a challenge. When I started modelling, sample size was a 10. Today samples are often a size  4-6. And as I prioritise my health over fashion, it means a lot of training is involved for me to be at my modelling best.

However If I’m modelling my collections, I don’t feel much pressure at all. I love working with my fabulous teams, creating beautiful images that represent not only my brands that I put so much love into, but a healthy image for all women.

Some girls are naturally skinny and that’s beautiful, but a lot of us aren’t…and starving ourselves isn’t beautiful. We come in all shapes and sizes and I really want to help women embrace their curves, and love themselves no matter what our bust or dress size is.

As an actress, I put a lot of pressure on myself as I’m very self-critical and a perfectionist. I actually suffer incredible stage fright and have a fear of auditioning too… why act then right??

Ha ha but once I’m on set I’m fine. I LOVE acting, but I dislike auditioning – it’s petrifying. I love film and TV but I don’t do stage, as my stage-fright is just too crippling.

But I really enjoy throwing myself into a character; it’s a rather magical process. I’m ready to sink my teeth into some fabulous comedy again. I love to laugh and make other people laugh…

As a woman, I don’t feel any pressure. I am very blessed and grateful for my career, my amazing loved ones and the life I lead….we’re lucky we don’t live in a misogynistic society here in Australia.

You’re also a keen entrepreneur, vego chef and designer, can you tell me about your latest projects?

I’m designing more creations for my signature jewellery collection ‘Annalise’ available on my website. I majored in jewellery design and sculpture at university, it’s so wonderful to have gone back to my artistic  roots and launch my jewellery collection.

It makes me so happy to see women and girls wearing both my underwear and sleepwear range. There’s something so rewarding about others appreciating the design and care. It makes the process feel less self-indulgent…which painting and being an artist can often be.

I’m also working on an exciting new project, one that’s very close to my heart, and which I’ve been working on for years, where Love Lunch can finally come back to life, and where I can incorporate all I believe in and practice. I can’t wait to be able to s hare that with others… I’m going to have my luxury yoga and health retreats in Australia! I’ve finally found the most exquisite waterfront property with a huge organic vegetable garden and fruit trees 4 hours drive north of Sydney. It’s just incredible. I’m hoping to be able to announce my first retreat in the next few weeks!

I’ve also been asked to design uniforms and a gym wear range for F45! Designing gym and yoga wear has been a long standing dream of mine too and I’m hoping to start my own swimwear range specialising in the larger bust sizes this year too.

I’m still working at penning my Love Lunch cook book, and of course I’m continuously working on many environmental and animal rights charities such as MSC RSPCA and various cancer charities.

Annalise you have to share; you’re an inspiring woman who’s managed to ‘have it all’ – the brilliant career, a happy relationship and international recognition. What do you attribute your success to, can you share your top tips?

That’s so sweet, thank you. I guess being a hard worker, being innately positive, being true to myself, perhaps a little bit fearless has helped me along the way.

I often see you on the mat at BodyMindLife or dancing up a storm at the Future Sound of Yoga. How has yoga impacted your life?

Yoga and meditation are the most beneficial, amazingly beautiful practices and I can’t imagine my life without them.  Both really help reduce stress and keep me physically, spiritually and emotionally balanced.

What lights up your soul and inspires the bejesus out of you?

My loved ones. Artists. Nature.

What shits you off and infuriates the hell outta of you (because for every light, there is always shadow)?

Racism, homophobia and cruelty to animals.

Top 3 things your loving right now and why?
